Living the busy life seems all the norm.
We are used to going from one activity to the next without so much as a moment to breathe.
Busy, busy is the cry.
I remember my college days shortly after I became a Christian. Yes, imagine that, it was during my college years that I finally surrendered to God. But, I digress.
I certainly was a busy bee. There I was in grad school in one of the most prestigious ivy league schools, living in New York City — the city that never sleeps. The were Bible studies, one-on-one discipling times, campus devotionals, project deadlines and of course, fun.
Yes, busy would be a fitting description.
It was during a weekly devotional that it really hit me.
I was at the women’s mid-week service and the sister who was leading the devotional had me pegged.
I don’t think she knew me beyond a five-minute conversation during fellowship break, but it didn’t matter. She saw right through me.
The person she described fit me to a tee.
Rushing through the church door, barely getting there in time, running ragged. And at the first ‘how are you’ the single word that would spill out of my mouth was ‘busy’.
Oh, there might have been a couple other words. But they were more of the same.
Like “crazy busy” or I might go on and explain why I was so busy. I was leading the busy life alright.
“You wear busy like a badge”, she said. “You think it’s a badge of honor.”
It’s been more than 20 years since she said those words and my how they stuck.
It turns out the busy life wasn’t just for my college days.
It is in vain that you rise up early
    and go late to rest,
eating the bread of anxious toil;
for he gives to his beloved sleep.
Read more about the telltale signs that signal when I’m simply too busy for my own good right here on Jaime Wiebel’s site.
The times might have changed but the diagnosis is the same: if I’m too busy for God, I’m just too busy.
How about you?Â
Do you feel stuck in a season of busyness? Is busy your badge?
Feeling the need to break away from busy?
Stop by Jaime’s blog to read It’s Time to Shine, Make Moments Matter, where I share about being too busy for God. I talk about how I spot the signs and what I do about it. I pray my story helps you break away from the busy life.

Melissa Gendreau says
This is a constant struggle for me, Marva! I’m having to continually and intentionally look at my schedule and ensure I’m not overloading myself and giving “good” but less important things priority in my life.
Charlie | MississippiMom says
Busy like a badge of honor? Been there, done that! In fact, my post today is about stopping to “be still.” Thanks so much for your post and think your course sounds wonderful!
Sharla says
As someone who has a habit of piling on things to do, I found this to be a great reminder to make time for rest and stillness, so I can hear God’s voice.

I love this, Marva. This is so true. We wear busy like a badge. We live in a go get em till we are ragged time and then we toil and wonder why we are spinning our wheels. We’re running on the hamster wheel of life with no way off. We all need ways to make our moments matter. So glad to be digging into this course next week. Blessings.
Marva | Sun Sparkle Shine says
I’m looking forward to doing it with you, Jaime. We need to get off that hamster wheel!!! 🙂
Blessings, dear friend.

I used to feel being busy showed my worth. Now I know better!
Marva | Sun Sparkle Shine says
I’ve been right there with you, Jerralea. And like you, God showed me a better way. Thank God for grace, right?
Lovely having you here today!
Rebecca Jones says
That is a word fitly spoken. I spent a lot of time running and getting nowhere, learning His rest has me doing more in a few minutes, than I ever did before.
Marva | Sun Sparkle Shine says
Isn’t that amazing, Rebecca. There’s something about resting in Him that gives us the ‘get-up-and-go’. Lol.
It just reminds me how faithful He is.
Blessings to you, dear friend.
Michele Morin says
This post is the cry of my heart.
I do want to break free of the “busy” life and to stop wearing “busy” as if it were a badge of honor and a validation of my existence!
Marva | Sun Sparkle Shine says
I’m with you, Michele. God knows our cry and He’s always quick to answer when we lean on Him.
Blessings to you!
