Have you ever wondered how to make today count when life is moving at lightening speed?
Perhaps you’re discouraged as you reflect on your year so far.
Many lose track of their good intentions in the first quarter of the year, so by September we find ourselves in one of two camps. Either you’re waiting on the sidelines hoping to coast through the holidays so you can start over in January. Or the cool fall air is giving you the kick you need to make a big push to the end.
Which one are you in? Camp Coast-it-Out? Or Camp Make-it-Count?
I’m in camp #2, eager to make the next few months count. And count big.
Starting today.
So, if you’re sitting on the fence wondering if you have the energy to finish the year strong, this is the motivation you need.
Here are five surefire ways to rekindle your spark and make today count.
Want to Make Today Count? Start here…
1. Run to get the prize
Read: 1 Corinthians 9:24-27
Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.” – 1 Corinthians 9:24
Like it or not, life is a race, my friend. If you find yourself running a race you didn’t sign up for, life might feel really unfair at the moment. I’m sorry.
While you may have little say about your circumstances, you can choose how you run your race. You can run aimlessly, without direction and go nowhere fast. Or you can run in such a way that will make today count and focus on the prize.
The Bible encourages you to run so that you can get the prize. Keep moving forward and stay in the race. Trust God with the rest of the details. Which brings me to the next point.
2. Don’t get discouraged and give up
Read: Galatians 6:7-10
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” – Galatians 6:9
Doing the right thing can be really hard sometimes. Doing the right thing for a long time without seeing the results can be even harder. I understand if you feel like giving up. Maybe you have already. But pick yourself up and keep going. The harvest — the prize — is closer than you think.
3. Put on God’s armor
Read: Ephesians 6:10-20
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” – Ephesians 6:10-11
On our own we’re prone to become weary, get discouraged and give up. We need God’s power to keep going. This passage in Ephesians reminds us to put on the full armor of God: the belt of truth; breastplate of righteousness; shield of faith; helmet of salvation; sword of the Spirit – in other words, get ready for battle.
The enemy aims to defeat you. God’s armor offers the protection you so desperately need to help you be victorious.
4. Press on
Read: Philippians 3:12-14
But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 3:13-14
Don’t worry about all the things you didn’t accomplish this year, keep moving forward. Looking back will keep you stuck, but with your eyes on the prize you will accomplish the things God has in store for you. Press on and make today count.
Wondering where your minutes went? Our Time to Shine course will help you find them.
5. Be strong in God’s grace
Read: 2 Timothy 2:1-7
You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.” – 2 Timothy 2:1
Even when you stay focused, keep your eyes on the prize and keep moving forward, you might falter. It’s likely you’ll still have moments of discouragement and be tempted to give up.
God isn’t expecting perfection but He wants you to trust Him to lead you forward. His grace is sufficient for you.
How about you?
Are you tempted to throw your hands up in the air and hang up 2018? Not so fast!
Let’s keep moving forward, my friend. Take it one step at a time and make today count.

Thank you for these great reminders from scripture, Marva! Sometimes it is hard to keep trying when things don’t seem to change, but that’s where perseverance and trust come in. We don’t see the whole picture, but God does, and His timing is perfect. Blessings to you! I’m happy to be your neighbor this week at the #BVNetworkParty!

So true, Gayl. I keep praying to trust His plan in those moments when the way seems so cloudy. He always has the perfect view and sometimes He even gives me a glimpse to remind me to keep going. What a good God we serve!
Mary says
I try to be aware of the Holy Spirit’s guidance, to be still, to hear His voice, to see His wonders, and to do something for someone else. I pray that I am doing what He wants me to do each day, knowing that if I mess up and miss the opportunity, He will not give up on me, but will give me another chance tomorrow.
Marva | Sun Sparkle Shine says
Amen, Mary. God never gives up on us. Isn’t that good news? He is always so full of grace.
Blessings!
