He was one brave soul.
He responded to the call, braved the waves, and stepped where no man had gone before.
He boldly and unbelievably walked on water!!!
That man was Peter. And we hear of his story in Matthew 14:22-33.
We are told about this unbelievable miracle and Peter’s incredible faith. But we also see that his amazing feat came to an abrupt end.
Peter, in spite of his courage, doubted. For just a minute he took his eyes off of the one in whom he had put his confidence. He looked around, considered his circumstances, and … you guessed it… started to sink.

This is just one of the biblical stories referenced by Dawn Klinge in her just-released book, Look to Jesus: How to Let Go of Worry and Trust God. (Read on to find out how you can win a copy or enter here when you subscribe to Sparkle Highlights).
Dawn points out that God used Peter’s water-walking adventure to show that Jesus “really was the Son of God, and that he was in control – that he could be trusted.” Now if that isn’t a lesson we all need to learn, I don’t know what is!
Trusting God is by no means easy. If we think about it long enough we just might admit that trust is something that many of us need to work on. Like Peter, we can go from trust to doubt in seconds. Yet there is hope.
In ‘Look to Jesus’ Dawn takes readers through many examples of God’s faithfulness. She uses Peter’s story, her own and those of others to encourage us to let go of worry and trust God.
So today, I am very pleased to have Dawn as my guest as she shares with us about her book, ‘Look to Jesus’.
Dawn is a writer living near Seattle, Washington with her husband, Derek, and their two kids, Grace and Trent. She was a church girl her entire life, but says she’s still trying to figure out what it looks like to put her trust in Jesus. It’s no surprise then that trust is one of the main topics she writes about on her blog, Above the Waves.
Here Dawn graciously offers some insights into the book, why she wrote it and some thoughts on our pursuit of trust.
Interview with Dawn Klinge, author of ‘Look to Jesus’
Marva: What inspired you to write the book?
Dawn: Anxiety is something I’ve struggled with for all my life. I like to be in control. Most of the time, it’s fairly easy to keep that illusion going — the one where I think I’m in control. It took a heartbreaking event, which was decidedly outside of my control, to prompt me to take a closer look at what it really meant to trust Jesus. It was the break-up of the church I was a part of — a place I was deeply invested in and loved. That time of seeking God and asking questions about why he was trustworthy led to this book.
M: How did you come to a decision to trust God? Would you say that there was a turning point or a light bulb moment for you?
D: Trusting God has been a series of decisions made throughout my life. My relationship with Jesus has deepened over time. Turning to God, first, is much more reflexive than it used to be.
M: So what does trusting God look like for you on a daily basis?
D: Trusting God on a daily basis means that when I start to worry, I take my concerns to Him, in prayer. I remind myself of who God is by reading His Word and by paying attention to what He has already done and to what He is doing right now in my life.
M: Many of us tend to worry about little things. How do you suggest we deal with this?
D: For me, I deal with this by replacing those thoughts with the truths of who God is. There are so many scriptures that deal with fear and worry in the Bible. I try to remind myself of those when I’m worried about big or little things.
M: What advice would you give to someone who’s really struggling with trusting God right now?
D: I would advise that person to take those concerns to God in prayer. He can handle our doubts. He loves us so much. I’ve had times where I have told God that I’m having a hard time trusting him and he has met me right where I am. His Spirit can change our hearts.
M: If there is one take-away that you would want readers to have, what would it be?
D: I want to encourage people to focus on who Jesus is. As we draw closer to Jesus we learn more about why he is worthy of our trust and why we can let go of our worries. God is in control.
Thank you so much, Dawn for visiting and sharing your thoughts on trusting God.

Great post, Marva and Dawn. I didn’t realize learning trust was the background for your blog, Dawn, but it makes sense!
“I remind myself of who God is by reading His Word and by paying attention to what He has already done and to what He is doing right now in my life.” That and the previous statement about taking worry to God in prayer is what it’s all about. You consistently point us back to the Lord and keeping our eyes on Him, and that is truly the only way we can lick this worry battle!
I hope I win the book! lol Wishing you all the best in getting this book into the hands of women everywhere who need your Truth. I so appreciate how you uphold the Word of Truth.

So true. “We can go from trust to worry in seconds.” I love that Dawn is taking her worries to Christ first more now … It does take time to develop that muscle. Her book sounds really good!
sunSPARKLEshine says
I agree, Dianne. God continually calls me to trust Him in new ways. When it comes to trust, I can never feel like I’ve arrived.
I hope you get a chance to check out the book too. Wishing you a great week ahead!

It’s amazing how very much God can make of us if we trust him. Yet, sometimes we stubbornly just want to go it alone. It’s kind of silly. What a fabulous book and thank you for reviewing it and allowing us to get to know the author better.
sunSPARKLEshine says
Jen, you’re so right. I sometimes fall into that category of going it alone but thank God for grace.
I really enjoyed learning more about Dawn and her thoughts on trust. It’s an area so many of us stuggle with and I pray that her words will bless others. So glad you stopped by.

Marva,
Thank you for stopping by my little corner of the world on Tuesday. I just love the story of Peter walking on water. I am so encouraged that Peter struggled with completely trusting God too. For me trusting God is a daily thing. I am still a work in progress,
sunSPARKLEshine says
Hi Sarah, it was a pleasure to visit you and read about your amazing story. Peter’s walking on water was indeed a miracle but I love that God continues to do modern day miracles as evidenced by your life. Take heart that many of us struggle with trust on a daily basis. It’s encouraging to know that I’m in good company. 🙂

Marva, I love the name of your blog, the reminder that we His children sparkle like jewels in His crown! I am also learning to trust God more and more esp. in times of change, and realizing more and more that He is in control. I like what Dawn said about trusting God isn’t instantaneous, but a “series of decisions made throughout my life.” That’s how it’s been for me, too. He is always faithful. I’m visiting from #TestimonyTuesday.
sunSPARKLEshine says
Thank you so much, Gayl! You\’re so sweet to stop by and leave such kind words. Dawn has definitely shared some nuggets of truth for us to hold on to.
I pray that you too will shine like a jewel in His crown! Wishing you blessings.
