I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope.
Psalm 130:5
I’m not a big fan of waiting. This past week I had to exercise a lot of patience as I waited in line for hours to receive a service. As many would do, I turned to my trusty Kindle app to help me survive the madness (at least that’s what it felt like after the first hour). Luckily, I keep a handful of books on my Kindle for this very purpose.
I scrolled to one that I got some months ago and started reading just to pass the time.
Turns out it was just what I needed during that seemingly unbearable waiting period.
Sarah’s Garden by Deb Wolf is a beautiful story of a young girl who’s been given a special garden to take care of. It starts out very idyllic but as the story unfolds we learn of Sarah’s challenges and struggles with tending her garden. Complete with villains and of course, a hero, it is a lovely story for young and old.
As I read Sarah’s Garden, I couldn’t help but notice the parallels between Sarah’s story and our own. The challenges that we go through in life are very similar to Sarah’s. Just like Sarah we also encounter villains and bandits. All sorts of things crop up to steal our joy. We are often well-intentioned but sometimes at a loss as to how to rise above the fray.
It takes courage, a lending hand (or two) and grace to free us from the weeds that so easily entangle us.
And just like Sarah we have hope.
We don’t have to stay entangled by weeds or bogged down in mud. The bible teaches us that God wants all of his children to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. (1 Timothy 2:3 – 4)
Christmas is as good a time as any to get to know this truth that we hear about. I encourage you to spend some time in the Bible this holiday season. Get to know the baby who came down to us and the Prince of Peace who is coming back. He is mighty to save! (And yes, he can even save you from a maddening 2-hour wait! I’m living proof.) 🙂
In the meantime, I think you’d enjoy Sarah’s Garden as much as I did. To read more about the story or to purchase a copy of your own, click on the links* below.

About Sparkle Moments
Here at Sparkle Moments I enjoy sharing little glimpses of sparkle with you. This is where I reflect on my week and remember how awesome our God is. Consider this your weekend inspiration — that jumping off point that encourages you to enjoy a weekend that sparkles!
What is a Sparkle Moment?
- Living in the Caribbean, I am fortunate to be surrounded by amazing beauty. I get to see beautiful sunsets, bright blue skies, sparkling blue waters, and white sandy beaches, almost everyday. Enjoying God’s creation is pure SPARKLE, no matter what part of the world you live in.
- Every now and again there are those little everyday moments when something special happens. A butterfly pauses long enough for the camera shutter, a little girl dances in the rain, someone says a kind word that lifts your spirits…ahhh…SPARKLE!
- On the flip side, we have some days when there’s no sun, no shine. It’s a plain and gloomy day until we create our own sparkle. Sometimes a pick-me-up is what we need! When we choose to add our own beauty, those moments can SPARKLE too.
Sparkle Moments come in all shapes and sizes, but one thing’s for sure, they make our hearts sing!
