One of my goals this year is to seek God above and before everything else.
That includes seeking God before Facebook, before the doubts and worries of the day set in, and before my own agenda.
I aim to put Him first and be intentional about seeking God every day.
I’m in awe that God wants to have a relationship with me in the first place.
Like David, this thought sometimes crosses my mind:
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man that you care for him? Psalm 7:3-4
In the big scheme of things I could feel very small and insignificant. Yet, the same God who created the heavens and the earth cares about the littlest details of my life.
And He wants to have a relationship with me.
He invites me to seek Him out and draw closer to Him. Isn’t that amazing?
In the book of Psalms, there are scores of “you and me” references that speak to this one on one relationship with God.
But you, O Lord, are a shield about me,
my glory, and the lifter of my head. Psalm 3:3
For you are my rock and my fortress;
and for your name’s sake you lead me and guide me. Psalm 31:3
Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me,
for in you my soul takes refuge;
in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge,
till the storms of destruction pass by. Psalm 57:1
Show me a sign of your favor,
that those who hate me may see and be put to shame
because you, Lord, have helped me and comforted me. Psalm 86:17
Turn to me and be gracious to me,
as is your way with those who love your name. Psalm 119:132
Teach me to do your will,
for you are my God!
Let your good Spirit lead me
on level ground! Psalm 143:10

It’s as if God dropped all these hints to say, “draw closer”.
What’s more is that God promises when we seek Him with all our hearts, we will find Him.
You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.
Jeremiah 29:13
So, what does it look like to seek God? How do we even go about seeking Him?
Here are three ways we can seek God on a daily basis.
3 Ways to Seek God without Getting Overwhelmed
1. Seek God by listening to Him
God gifted us with this love letter in the form of the Bible and when we read it it’s as if God is talking directly to us.
When we read the Bible it’s as if we’re sitting at God’s feet listening to Him.
Currently, I’m reading through the Bible chronologically using a plan like this one and writing scriptures daily from my Light for My Path plans.
All of His dreams for us, demonstrations of His great love, encouragement for our journey — it’s all in there!
2. Seek God by talking to Him
Another great way to seek God is to talk to Him and share what’s on our hearts. Like any great relationship communication must be two-way or else it will all just fall apart. God longs to hear from us.
When we pray and talk to God, we are connecting to the heart of God.
Here’s one of my favorite prayer resources.
3. Seek God by sharing Him
You can tell when someone is in love cause they just can’t stop talking about their love interest. Similarly, when we spend time with Him we’ll naturally want to talk about Him with others. That may be with our children, with our friends and even with absolute strangers.
At first you might not think of this as seeking God, but God has a way of becoming more real to us when we share Him with others. By talking about what we learned in our time with God we begin to learn deeper things about His character and who He is. And when we express gratitude for the ways He’s blessed us, our love for Him grows even more.
Besides, not only do we grow in appreciation for God, but others get to know Him as well.
How about you?
How do you seek God? Do you have some practical tips you can share with us? I’m all ears!
If you struggle with making time to seek God, know that you’re not alone. I can relate and so can many others. Start with these simple steps and let us cheer one another on.
Wishing you blessings,

Hello dear friend. I am not surprised to find a wealth of wisdom and encouragement here, Marva. I love each one of these ways that you are applying to your own life. Doing so is an excellent practice to center our hearts on Christ each day. Thank you for sharing. I hope all is well. Have a fantastic weekend and may God continue to bless you and yours.

I appreciated this post. Of those three, I forget to share him most often. I try to share him with my children daily, but it’s easy to find yourself at the end of the day and wonder what happened.
Thanks for this reminder.

I have made it as habit since last summer,to have tea time with the Lord. I used to read a book or do something else, but the Lord placed it upon it heart to have that time with Him. I imagine him sitting on the sofa across from my chair and I start to have a conversation with him, pouring out my heart. There have been times when scripture verses would pop up in my mind, so I’d open my bible to read it and then pray for discernment. Then just last month, when I was very sick,I started waking up and thanking him for the very breath that He gives me each moment.
A friend of mine in Tennessee, challenged me 9 years ago to write a Thankful Thursday post weekly on my Facebook page. I have done it not just as a way to uplift others, but I have challenged them to share what they are thankful for that week too.
Recently,I went back over a few years of postings and it’s interesting to see my walk through those posts.

These are awesome Marva!! I seek God By quiet time with Him which I guess is a combination of two or all three of these. I don’t always get it right daily, but I do find that I get it done if I do it first thing.

Hi friend. I”m in a small group and we are reading through the Bible. I love hearing how God is moving in the lives of others. Often times, something stands out to someone (a particular word or phrase) that I hadn’t thought of. God’s word is living and active. It’s sure nice visiting your beautiful blog today.

I love these practical and simple tips, Marva! I sure do struggle with making time to seek God in this busy season of life, so I loved these reminders.

I love these practical tips friend! I think we all need that little reminder from time to time to keep seeking HIM! 🙂 After all, it’s the only seeking that counts when it all boils down, right? xoxo

Great point, Nicki. I can think of all the times I’ve sought after other things that just turned out to be meaningless in the end. He’s the real treasure!
Bless you, my friend.

I really enjoyed this. I am so glad to hear that other people struggle with finding time with God also. I really do have the best intentions. I try to schedule a quiet time everyday, but I have to admit that sometimes it just does not happen. However, I can tell those days when I do not get my alone time with Him, making me even more bent on making sure I do not miss it the next day. Thank you for sharing these tips.
Marva | Sun Sparkle Shine says
Yes, Angela, the struggle is real. 🙂
When I get to spend time with God I can see the difference it makes and it motivates me all the more to fight for that time.
Glad you felt like you’re not alone.
Hugs!

I love how you emphasize the relationship rather than routine or duty. It’s so much simpler to focus on the relationship than to figure out formulas or methods or “the right way”.
Marva | Sun Sparkle Shine says
Thanks for pointing that out, Jana. I didn’t even realise that I was doing that but I really do believe that it’s all about a relationship rather than a responsibility or duty. It’s so freeing when we see it that way, don’t you think?

I use my time driving to worship and pray. I have to spend a lot of time in the car, so when I start my day doing this on my daily commute, it just helps the day go SO well! Love how you pointed out all of the “you and me” reference in Psalms. I have never thought about that before!
Marva | Sun Sparkle Shine says
I love that you capitalize on that time, Leah. I should have mentioned that the way we worship and seek will look different during different seasons of life.
Glad you enjoyed the scriptures!

Wanting to be more intentional with daily time with God, I joined a Daily Grace bible study. I am not a big app person, but I am enjoying this.
I think one thing that helped me was realizing that time with God will look different at different times of our life. Before kids we may have a set routine and be uninterrupted. After kids? Well I remember praying when nursing. As it was quiet. I used to think I needed to be out of bed to pray. Now right when I wake up and am still in bed and calm still reigns, I chat with God for a few minutes. We need to be creative and open to change.
Marva | Sun Sparkle Shine says
Great tips, Theresa. I was just mentioning to Leah in a comment that different seasons will look differently. I enjoy the season I’m in now with my kids as teens and pre-teens. Recently my daughter has been getting up earlier to spend extra time getting ready 🙂 which means I have to get up even earlier to find that quiet space. I think God likes to keep us on our toes and encourages us to mix things up a bit. Lol.

Marva, hi! I love this gentle reminder to seek God by listening. That requires some effort, to turn off, to walk away, to say, ‘no, not yet’ to all that social media stuff.
This was a needed visit this morning and I thank you …
Marva | Sun Sparkle Shine says
I’m glad you can relate, Linda. It’s the encouragement I needed as well. 🙂
